- Enterprises face twin threats from ransomware
The new trend of ransomware such as Maze, DoppelPaymer, Ryuk, etc. using the RansomHack or Double Extortion tactic of encrypting user files as well exfiltrating private and sensitive information is a major new threat for enterprises and is expected to continue in 2021 as well.
- Increased ransomware attacks on the Healthcare & Pharma Sector
The Healthcare & Pharma sector will continue to be in the spotlight after a year of facing a new wave of ransomware and extortion demands. Attack groups target this sector because of the sensitive and personal data of patients stored, making it necessary for the sector to deploy a comprehensive suite of security solutions.
- More APT attacks like Operation SideCopy
The year 2021 will see more attacks like Operation SideCopy, an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) attack targeting the Indian Defence Forces which was discovered by Seqrite.
- CobaltStrike beacons in major cyber-attacks
The leak of the source code of CobaltStrike, a threat emulation kit used for post-exploitation, covert communication and browser pivoting, will play a major factor in cyber-attacks in 2021. Malware authors will now be able to make customized changes in the source code of CobaltStrike to evade detection. Already, the involvement of CobaltStrike beacons has been observed in some major backdoor and APT attacks.
- The rise in attacks on Remote Work Infrastructure
The remote working model, which became a necessity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will continue to see a rise in attacks in 2021. The new attack surface will need to be patched and updated regularly by IT administrators or new vulnerabilities could be swiftly attacked by malware authors.
